Boxabl (Box block) was founded in 2017 in Las Vegas as a small startup founded by Paolo Tiramani ,  Galiano Tiramani and Kyle Denman. After several years of experimentation, experimental work, technology development, and prototyping, the company developed a project for the house of the Casita studio, which it presented in early 2020. And at the end of 2020 began mass production.

Casita modules are square buildings, similar to residential trailers, but much more comfortable and not inferior in comfort to apartments.

According to Boxabl technology, houses are made of steel frames and sandwich panels, of thin concrete sheets, with a layer of insulation, polystyrene foam, between them. This design has low material consumption, low weight and low cost. Concrete panels are durable, won’t burn, rot, and are tough enough to withstand hurricanes. In addition, sandwich panels provide good thermal and noise insulation. The area of ​​a standard living unit boxabl is comparable to a standard studio apartment, 375 square feet, or 34.8 square meters.

Boxabl houses have a folding “Transformer House” design. When folded, they take up a small volume and fit in a standard shipping container or truck bed. They are also mobile, if necessary, the module can be quickly folded, transferred to a new place and just as quickly expanded, bringing it to a living state.


Why do I consider boxabl homes to be one of the beginnings of the space age building industry?

These houses are based on the basic principles of space age building technologies.

Their production has a high level of automation, it is more like the production of cars on an assembly line. Houses are made by automatic machines, almost without the use of manual labor.

Not just construction parts are produced, but products with a high level of readiness. In fact, the houses are ready to move in.

A minimum of materials are used in the production of boxabl. Thin concrete sheets, foam polymer insulation, steel frames. This results in material savings, low manufacturing costs, lightness and mobility of the design.

The boxabl company associates itself with space. The module studio was bought by Elon Musk as a personal apartment at the cosmodrome in Texas, Boca Chica. Musk, as a practical person, appreciated its advantages in convenience and mobility. And boxabl announced possible plans to produce habitable modules using their technology for orbital stations or Mars.

But I think this is more a publicity stunt than an intention to participate in space construction projects of the future. Orbital or Martian habitation modules should be round, cylindrical, so that internal pressure does not break their walls, about 10 tons per square meter. And it was convenient to place them in tunnels under a layer of soil that protects against radiation and extreme temperatures.

It is not yet clear whether boxabl will participate in space programs or not. But the firm is definitely in the process of transforming the mass housing market, replacing expensive, material-intensive structures with more affordable and comfortable space-age homes.
